Joseph W. Wiley, 57 of rural Cantril died
at 2 AM on Sunday, November 10th, 1996 in a fire of his home. He
was born Friday, February 3rd, 1939 near Mt. Sterling to Frank R. and Cloris
Grimes Wiley. He graduated from Fox Valey High School in 1956.
Joe was born near Mt. Sterling, Iowa, the fourth
child and second son to Cloris and Frank Wiley. Delivered by a country
doctor. His mother told Billie his youngest daughter that when Joe
was placed in her arms he asked her what she was going to name him.
She said she hadn't thought of that and the doctore told her that she should
name him after a good man. So she name Joe after the doctor.
When he was younger, he was allergic to cow's
milk and had to drink goat's milk, Billie thinks she remembers him saying.
Any way he hated goat's milk.
He later moved with parents and siblings to
the area just southeast of Cantril where the 80 and 160 are now located.
He married Kay Brooks and had 5 children with
her and adopted her daughter Tammy. Violet Christine was the first,
born with a heart condition. Joseph Warren Jr. was next. The
couple then had twins Jeffrey Allen and Julia Anne (who was named after
Joe's Dad's Mom) and then they had Melissa Kay. They divorced and
Joe later married Rose Mary Garrett. Between them, one daughter was
produced, Billie Jo. When Joe and Rose divorce, Billie stayed with
her father. He married a third time, but produced no more children,
to Martha Griener. They, too, eventually divorced.
Joe was a factory worker at Iowa Malleable
Iron & Steel in Fairfield for over 25 years, before that he worked
for a factory in Keosauqua. When Iowa Malleable closed in the early
90s, Billie and her husband Steve Garner, helped him move his trailer down
to Mt. Sterling, Iowa where Vonnie, his sister, was living. Eventually
the trailer was moved to a piece of land owned by Cloris, his mother, called
the Scaberry Place. That is where he passed away.
Joe died in a trailer fire. The general
belief is that there was faulty wiring in the trailer or that there were
animals playing with an extention cord. The fire started in the kitchen.
His body was found in the hallway by the back door, which had been sealed
shut to preserve heat in the house. The first person to notice the
fire was Kevin Michael Kennedy, one of Joe's nephews. He and Kelly,
his brother, tried to break into the blaze to get Joe out but it was not
use.
Surviving are six brothers, William of Arbela,
Missouri, Wayne and Robert of Milton, Frankie and Paul of Cantril, and
Glen of Mt. Sterling and four sisters, Virginia Sutter of Ankeny, Vivian
Williams, Vickie Wiley and Vonnie Ash of Cantril. Five children,
Joe Jr., Jeff, Julia, and Melissa of Ottumwa and Billie of Fairfield.
Several grandchildren, Heather Dawn, Michelle, and Tarah by Tammy, Christina
and Micheal by Christine, Chad, Amanda and Amber by Joe Jr., Mitchell and
Lindsay by Julia, and Kindra and Mindy by Melissa.
He is preceded in death by his father Frank
Raymond Wiley, his daughter Violet Christine Small, and a granddaughter
by Billie, Dannidyn Montana Christine Garner.
He was buried on November 12th, 1996 beside
his fatheer in Maple Grove Cemetery in Cantril, Iowa. His brothers
carried his casket. The funeral was held at Pedrick Funeral Home
in Keosauqua, Iowa with Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating.
